Chapter 10
“This stuff really stinks!”
Ben Howard smiled down at his son, whose nose was drawn up in disgust from the catfish bait.
“That’s why it catches the big ones.”
Max wasn’t convinced. “We didn’t catch anything the last time.”
“It happens. That’s why they call it fishing and not catching.”
Apparently, Max had heard this line too many times. “I don’t think you ever do any catching, Dad.”
They were unloading their poles and bait from the back of the pick-up, which Ben had parked beneath the interstate overpass.
“Oh, come on. We caught a bunch last month.”
“Those were all sunfish. We couldn’t eat them.”
“You’re beginning to sound like your mother. She doesn’t think I can catch fish, either.”
He took his son’s hand and led him across the small frontage road then lifted him over a guardrail. Climbing over himself, he found the grass up to his knees and almost to his son’s shoulders. Pushing through it, they had only gone a few yards when Max abruptly stopped.
“What’s that, Dad?”
“What’s what?”
“Over there. The blue thing.”
Ben followed his son’s pointed arm until he caught sight of what Max had spotted.
“I’m not sure, some sort of a cloth or tarp, I think.” He took a few steps toward it, and as he got closer, he noticed flies swarming around. “I think it might be something dead.”
Max strained for a better look. “Like a deer?”
“Maybe.”
Ben took a couple more steps then stopped so suddenly that his son ran right into his back. He spun and tried to cover his son’s eyes.
“Get back, Max. We don’t want to get too close.”
“What is it?”
Not sure what to say, Ben just towed his son nearly a hundred feet in the opposite direction.
Max found himself half walking-half running. “Where are we going?”
“I have to make a phone call.”
“Now? I thought we were going fishing.”
Not anymore.
